Throughout my academic career people and things inside and outside of school have influenced me. The most influential people throughout my learning have been my family. They have helped me so much with improving my learning and have encouraged me to strive to do my best. However, one particular person in my family has helped me a lot and that is my baby brother Joseph.
Ever since I was a little girl, my parents would always read to me before I went to bed. Whether it was the same book every single night or three different books in the same night, they always read to me. I distinctly remember my dad reading me “the beginners bible” and then saying my prayers. My mom always read me the biscuit books and when I was old enough to play on the computer, I played Jump Start 1st Grade. It was the coolest game to play when I was younger because it made learning fun. Without these influences, I don’t know that I would have developed my love for reading and learning.
Being taught this way by my parents, I feel like I need to teach my brother the same things. My mom is a lot busier now then she was when I was younger so I spend a lot of time with Joseph alone. When he was three years old, he was diagnosed with Autism. Ever since then, I’ve been dying to know why he does the things he does, and what makes him do it. Although he can't consciously teach me something, the fact that I want him to learn from me, pushes me to try harder. Without him, I wouldn’t want to go into the major of Early Childhood Education. Now that I am in college, wanting to do nothing more than teach kids his age, I strive to do my best in order to get into my major. Being almost 13 years older than him, I try to give him what he has given me and help him do his best. Without him as my motivation, I wouldn’t have the will to do my best at URI.
Many times I am told that I am a great big sister. Whenever Joseph and I hang out together, I always try to teach him something new. Joseph and I have different dads and his dad isn't always there for him. I teach him everything I know. I helped him learn how to swing a bat to prepare for T-Ball and I taught him not to pick up a soccer ball with his hands because it's not allowed! Although these things don't seem like they would help me in the long run, they do. Joseph has made me realize what I want to do with the rest of my life. My practice with him will help me when I grow up and get my dream job of being a pre-school teacher. I want him to look up to me as a role model and hope that he wants to be, in a sense, just like his big sister!
Many people inside my schooling such as teachers and coaches have influenced me, however no one has influenced me or motivated me more than my family. Without them I wouldn’t have the will power to achieve all I can. They have made me try hard and be the best I can be. No one has pushed me to keep my grades up or stay in school more than my little brother. He will always continue to be my motivation as I continue to grow and learn.
